![]() ![]() Oh, did I tell you that there is also a part where you get to swim ? It's possibly not very realistic, as the weapons still work under water, but just goes to show how much fun using different mechanics there is to be had with this game. On one of those occasions it seems to me they are paying a tribute to the platform nature of the first games as you have to go around a kitchen without touching the flooded floor. What more could you want ? Funny stuff aside, you even have parts of the game where you are shrunk and get to interact with the environment, objects and enemies around you in a completely different way. You've got cars to drive (and a few other vehicles that have four wheels but are not exactly cars), enemies to shoot, puzzles - Half-Life style, and beautiful, scantily clad women to look at. You've also got steroids, beer (yes, beer LOL, it improves you abilities), and two secondary weapons: trip mines and pipe bombs that you can activate from a distance with something resembling a car alarm remote. Oh, you also have the holoduke, which is basically a holographic Duke to trick your enemies, while you turn temporarily invisible. I'm glad I did: you have plenty of weapons, each with different capabilities and even different ways to hit the enemy some weapons don't work on certain enemies, plus, you've got a weapon that freezes your enemies and you can just kick them to break them into pieces, and one that shrinks them. But in the end, at the price it was (and looking to the right of this page, Amazon seems to have it for sale for $9.50), I just decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. To be honest, I approached the game with lowered expectations, given the original reviews and all that's been said by the gamers. So, you're asking, is the game really that good ? Yes it is. Oh, you can also adjust the FOV after the patch I mentioned, but I chose to let it stay at the preset value, which seems very good. I bought the game a few days ago on the Steam sale, so I got to play the improved game, fully stable, both single-player and mulit-player and with the four weapon option enabled. ![]() ![]() Duke Nukem Forever is no exception: two months after the release, a patch with improved textures, the option to carry four weapons instead of the original two, fixes to the save data corruption, and fixes to the multiplayer, including a dedicated server overhaul, and the enabling of VAC anti-cheat, and the usual crash/compatibility fixes might very well have given this game a much higher score than the one you can currently read on Metacritic (5.4 for professional reviewers and 5.8 for the users). Secondly, perhaps game reviewers should start adapting to this new trend that seems to affect a lot of games nowadays: release first, patch later. But that is not exactly the game's problem, or is it ? On the one side you have a game being released to a new audience that doesn't really know what Duke Nukem is, and on the other to one that does but has moved on. And let's face it, many people have grown up since 1996 and their taste may no longer be compatible with the essence of Duke Nukem. And maybe there are a few reasons for that.įirst and foremost, it would be impossible for a game to live up to all this hype after so many years. This is probably the most underrated game of the year. I'm from the time of the original Duke Nukem, the 2d platform side scroller, and while I played and enjoyed those first games, I didn't get the chance to play Duke Nukem 3d, so my views on Duke Nukem Forever may be somewhat peculiar: in short, I love it. Experience the action and creativity derived from the pedigree of one of gaming's most innovative and respected developers Duke Nukem was and will forever be immortalized in gaming history, and this is his legend. Shoot hoops, lift weights, read adult magazines, draw crude messages on whiteboards or ogle one of the many beautiful women that populate Duke's life that is if you can pull yourself away long enough from kicking ass and taking names. This game puts pedal to the metal and tongue firmly in cheek, among other places. The King of All Shooters is back with over-the-top weapons, massive aliens and unprecedented levels of interactivity. Pig cops, alien shrink rays and enormous alien bosses won't stop our hero from accomplishing his one and only goal: to save the world, save the babes and to be a badass while doing it. The alien hordes are back and only Duke can save the world, again. Put on your sunglasses and prepare to step into the boots of Duke Nukem, whose legend has reached epic proportions in the years since his last adventure. ![]()
